Background:
The school opened in January 1968 in 'extensive' grounds with a central courtyard featuring a fishpond, seating, lawn and gardens. Part of a large field has been developed as a small farm with sheep, goats, geese, hens, rabbits, guinea pigs and a donkey, while a wild area and ditch, experimental garden, woodland and hedgerows have been created to provide pupils with an extension of classroom learning about natural habitats. Resources within the building include a 'large' gymnasium with changing rooms, dining room, library and computer suite. These facilties are used to promote the school's philosophy that classroom learning should be enriched 'with first hand experience wherever possible'. Children take part in education visits during the year, including residential trips, and visitors are invited to talk to pupils in class. The school has hosted two 'very successful' national primary history conferences on behalf of the Historial Association and details of its approach to history, including examples of the pupils' work, have been published in 'several' books.
