Background:

Founded by Henry VIII in 1541 as the Cathedral Choir School; moved to current site in Victorian residential area in 1885, enabling it to expand as a grammar school; became co-educational comprehensive in 1976. Playing fields are a mile from school; significant building programme over past 20 years has included new technology centre in 1993 and new mathematics block in 1996; new sports hall in 2003; £10 million capital programme began in 2006. There is a large academic sixth form. Music is a particular strength, with many orchestras and choirs; 40 pupils have achieved Grade 6 or above in music examinations. Full fixture list at all ages in all main sports. Outdoor and residential education involves 500 pupils on trips each year, with many going abroad. Cathedral choristers attend from age 11. Specialist science college status; 10 per cent of pupils selected. Over-subscribed, with nearly three applications per place; entry at 11, 15 and 17. Beacon status; DfES achievement award.
