One of the group of village colleges rooted in the Cambridgeshire tradition of community education that forms a 'necklace' of education, training and leisure provision around the city of Cambridge; nine miles northwest of city centre. Campus-style accommodation in extensive grounds; original 1958 buildings remodelled and extended in 1990/1; modern laboratories, design centre, workshops. Dual-use sports centre opened in 1993: large sports hall, fitness room, three squash courts, indoor swimming pool, floodlit hard tennis courts; second phase completed in 1995. Purpose-built performing arts facilities, inlcuding music suite, drama and recording studios. Teaching accommodation described as 'good and generous' by independent inspectors, who commented on quality and range of specialist teaching and facilities. Two further phases of building' opened in 1997 and 2000, have brought the capacity to 1,200 places. These will be filled through managed growth by September 2004.
