Background:
Created by Henry Morris, the pioneer of community education, the college was built in 1930 around the Grade II listed Fountain Court. Students are attracted from a broad catchment area stretching from Cambridge city to the Essex borders. A new 12-classroom teaching block, extensive refurbishment of the technology and sports facilities and a site-wide computer network have 'enhanced the teaching and learning opportunities', and more capital works are planned. There is an 'extensive' community programme, with some 5,000 local people using the college's educational, cultural and sports facilities each week. Music and drama at the fully-subscribed school are 'very strong' and more than 30% of pupils participate in a 'wide range' of extra-curricular activities. Technology has 'grown rapidly' in recent years and is a compulsory subject throughout the school, which was named as a 'good and improving' school in its 1996 annual Ofsted report.
