Background:
Opened in 1988 to serve an area of mainly private housing to the west of Peterborough, the school is housed in a 'modern' building set in 'landscaped' grounds. It is over-subscribed by about 15%. Teaching is planned to meet children's individual needs and two sessions a week are devoted to personal and social education (PSE), in which children explore feelings, relationships and expectations with their teachers. First-hand experiences are provided through educational visits. Some pupils receive individual tuition in the recorder or brass and string instruments and a number of after-school musical and sporting activities are offered, in addition to a homework club. Pupils participate in local swimming, rugby, football, netball, and cricket events. Extra facilities are paid for with funds raised by the Friends of Orton Wistow School. The school is also a partner school with Cambridge University Faculty of Education.
