Background:
The school opened in 1877 and moved to its current site in 1966. A major building project to increase permanent accommodation started in summer 2001. The school is situated in the village of Northborough, which has links with Oliver Cromwell and the poet John Clare. Its catchment area also covers the villages of Maxey and Deeping Gate while 25% of pupils come from a wide area beyond this, including Lincolnshire. Facilities include a hall equipped for physical education, drama and music, learner swimming pool with changing rooms and environment area. The school emphasises learning as a first-hand experience. It owns a four-acre orchard environmental studies area and offers a range of day visits and residential experiences such as a local field studies centre in Year 4, five-days at a Derbyshire camp in Year 5 and seven days at a camp in the Forest of Dean in Year 6. Its aim is for pupils to develop social independence skills and prepare for the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, as well as to enrich the curriculum. It is proud of its 'strong musical tradition' and extra-curricular activities include choir, orchestra, brass, violin and clarinet tuition, in addition to modern, country and Morris dancing, football, cross-country, and athletics. The 'fun house' breakfast and after-school club is available from 8.15am to 9.05am and from 3.30pm to 6pm. The 'strong' parents, teachers and friends organisation provided a 16-base ICTR suite and a new adventure playground in 2001. Northborough Primary aims 'to create an interesting, stimulating and friendly environment, where each individual can feel secure and valued and will develop his or her potential.' It has been a Beacon school since January 2001.
