Background:
Sir Harry Smith is a comprehensive community college. It was officially opened in 1954, having been built on the site of the old workhouse. The main section of the building is two-storeys high with long, wide corridors giving a sense of openness and space. Most recently the college benefited from the addition of a purpose-built performing arts block, opened in 1998, comprising a suite of well equipped music rooms, music practice rooms, drama studio with gallery and gymnasium with excellent facilities including a climbing wall. The college has a new six classrooms teaching block, a purpose-built technology area, a specialist college funded science laboratory, the creation of third full information and communication technology suite and a major restoration of over half of the windows in the college. The college curriculum covers the following subjects: English, mathematics, science, humanities, modern languages, physical education, art, drama, music, physical social and health education. The college aims to create a friendly and caring environment.
